Here are some techniques I had in my pattern I was selling on Etsy.
The tips are numbered and match the photo with same number.
The stitches are explained how I did them to make a particular shawl, which will also be pictured in the gallery.

*This may not be right yet but I'm working on it lol*
Thanks!
TIPS:
SO for the waistband, I use a half double crochet foundation chain. Turn, skip 2 and DC in 2 stitches, FPDC in 1 stitch, all the way down. It's ok if you don't match up with even stitches, just end with a DC. Chain 2 and turn. Next row we start the grunge with examples from below.
During the parts of the shawl you are not holing it up, I do a mishmash of SC, HDC, DC, and TR (treble) crochet through one row. It adds a textured like effect to the non distressed parts.
For the belt. I chain a lot! lol make a nice long belt. Add some cute charms like the bats I did or something to suit you.
I used the Mandala Ombre Yarn by Lion Brand found at my Walmart. I used the black/white/grey colored one and I did intentional color cutting. I wanted certain colors in certain areas, so I used a portion of maybe 3 or 4 rolls total. I had a bunch of left over balls in mostly white lol. Great for another project.

Pic 2 - Holes & holes +
Here are some holes highlighted in yellow. Simply chain 1 or 2 (2 gives ore of an opening) more than you are skipping stitches from the previous row. Example, you are skipping 4 stitches on the previous row, so you will chain 5 or 6. On the next row you will sc over that chain.
For the holes + this is the next row after the hole chain, highlighted in purple under the yellow, but instead of all sc over the chain, you (sc1, ch1) over the hole.
The small chain of holes, highlighted in purple at the bottom is SC1, CH1, SK1, SC1 on repeat for as big as you want that section.
Pic 3 - Holes
This is the same as above. Skip 5 stitches with a chain of 9 to make a bigger opening. On the next row, sc over that chain the same amount ., so 9 sc over the ch. (for the big hole circled) The small hole is a smaller number of chains.

Pic 4 - Pyramid Style Holes
These are over 4 or 5 rows. Each row has one more hole before and after the previous row. So the first row Chain 2 Skip 2 HDC in next st. ch 2, sk2 HDC in next st. Second row you would start 2 stitches before the first one on the previous row. Same Pattern: ch2,sk2,hdc in next. Make sure each row has 2 more than the row before, one on each end. Go as many rows as you want.

Pic 5 - Multi Level Holes
These holes are done over a series of rows as well. Each hole will chain 4 more than you are skipping. This will give it a nice drape with each hole level. The next row you will skip 2 chain more on each side than the previous chain, example. first row I skipped 5 chain 9, second row stitch up to chain, CH13, sc in next stitch of previous row, skipping the chain. I did NOT sc over the chains. I left them until the last hole. That chain you sc over to finish the levels of holes. This will create a drape and looseness to the garment. The row after the sc across the chain, this row you will pull it together like so:
stitch up to the sc over the ch of last level. skip 1, sc in next, skip 1, sc in next, sk1, sc in next. This will create a bump but it will add in to the grunge texture of the garment when done. By skipping a stitch and NOT chaining it will pull some of that drape in so the next few rows you should just do solid or "special stitches" (explained in another pic) to keep the tension under these levels.

Pic 7 - Multi Level Holes +
This gives the option to bring these levels down to the bottom hem. So depending on the length you are making, these levels should go 10 rows before you end. These chains I did sc over so there was not as much drape. The + signals the small holes across the bottom hole. This was a sc1, sk1, sc in next to create a new look. The last 2 rows should be your finishing rows to keep the section tighter. The holes also increase in size as you see clearer in this picture as from pic 5. I also added a few special stitches in at the end of the + row on this example. I just did a DC into the previous row 2x. I will explain that more on another pic.

Pic 8 - Pyramid Style Hole Collection
This is kind of like the above pyramid, only I didn't increase the rows. I just sk1, ch1, hdc in next for a few rows so it added a hole collection type area. on the row after this I ignored the chain. So the closed row after the collection, DC in each HDC skip the chains. it again will create a bulge or bubble but trust the process it will add to the texture of the grunge.

Pic 9 - Stitches or Special Stitches
These are fun and random throughout!! so after any stitch, pull up a BIG loop, yarn over, and either go one, two or even three rows! down and make a HDC, DC or TR stitch. If you go three rows you might want to treble, so yarn over twice before going into the stitch rows down. I just wrap around like a front post type stitch. It adds a cool effect in the areas that don't have holes or distressing. It looks really cool after a hole or just having a few in a row to create an effect.
